Mariea Antoinette: Straight From the Harp

Mariea Antoinette uses her harp to mix smooth jazz with R&B in an attractive package on this release. While the horns, strings and other instruments rotate, she keeps with Allan Phillips through most of the songs, who provides keyboards, percussion, guitar and drums in a modern feel.

You get electric rhythms with lovely harp strumming o pieces like “Fly Away” and the funky “I’m Gonna Love You” while a smooth synth groove comes across on “Give Me Your Love.” A dreamy “Journey” has Phillips and Antoinette creating the most intimate sound here, while some fun Caribbean mood is conjured on “Waiting In Vain” and an Indian lilt curries favor on “A Single Dance.” The mix of clever strumming on the strings and danceable riffs work well here, showing that the harp is not just for friends of St. Peter in the clouds.

- The Jazz Project

Urban-jazz harpist Mariea Antoinette’s new album offers a uniquely sprawling hybrid of harp harmonies and impassioned soloing, EDM-hip hop beats, R&B classics, gauzy rock guitar and dramatic violin underscoring from Karen Briggs. Showcasing Ms. Antoinette’s graceful and sensual harp theatrics amidst spacious jazz improvisations, the record explores the harp’s adventurous new possibilities. And this is accomplished with bravado and scintillating tempo on “Walk the Walk.” The hot-stepping soul train funk of “Give Me Your Love” will get you going before the quiet storm unleashes the joyful “Spend Sometime (With You)” for a romantic tryst.
